The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and Yellowstone National Park (YNP) officials have confirmed that a small hydrothermal explosion occurred in the Biscuit Basin thermal area of Yellowstone National Park on Tuesday morning, July 23, 2024. The explosion, which took place around 10 a.m., happened approximately 2.1 miles northwest of the iconic Old Faithful geyser.
According to the joint release by USGS and YNP, the explosion is believed to have originated near Black Diamond Pool, and YNP geologists are currently investigating the incident. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, although there was some damage to the boardwalk.
Videos recorded by park visitors on social media captured the intense explosion, showing people in close proximity to the incident. As a precautionary measure, Biscuit Basin, including the parking lot and boardwalks, has been closed until further notice to ensure visitor safety. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
Hydrothermal explosions are not uncommon in Yellowstone National Park, where water suddenly flashes to steam underground. The release mentioned an explosion at Porkchop Geyser in Norris Geyser Basin in 1989, as well as a smaller event in the same area on April 15, 2024. A similar explosion also occurred in Biscuit Basin on May 17, 2009.
USGS and YNP staff will continue to monitor the conditions in the area before reopening it to the public. However, the Grand Loop road remains open for visitors to explore other parts of the park.
Importantly, the joint release emphasized that such hydrothermal explosions are not indicative of impending volcanic eruptions and are not caused by magma rising towards the surface. Monitoring data suggests that Tuesday's explosion does not reflect any abnormal activity within the Yellowstone volcanic system, which is reportedly at normal background levels.
The USGS has assured the public that more information will be released as it becomes available. In the meantime, the authorities urge visitors to stay updated on the situation through official channels.
