In a tragic incident, the body of a hiker was discovered on a remote trail in Grand Canyon National Park, marking the sixth reported death in the sprawling park this month. The authorities have revealed that the hiker was a 60-year-old man from North Carolina.

According to the National Park Service, search-and-rescue personnel located the hiker's body on Wednesday using a helicopter along a trail that connects Lower Tapeats Camp and Deer Creek Camp. The hiker, who remains unidentified, was on a multiday backpacking trip when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The alarm was raised on Tuesday afternoon when the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report about a solo backpacker who had failed to check in with a family member while attempting the Thunder River Trail-Deer Creek loop. This approximately 25-mile looping hike along the Grand Canyon's North Rim features stunning crystalline water streams but also poses a challenge due to its infamously hot southern exposure.

The authorities have launched an investigation into the incident in coordination with the Coconino County medical examiner. Further details regarding the circumstances leading to the hiker's death are yet to be disclosed by park spokeswoman.

Grand Canyon National Park attracts millions of visitors annually with its breathtaking vistas, rust-colored canyons, and the scenic Colorado River. However, the park's rugged climate and steep-walled canyons can be unforgiving, as highlighted by numerous signs warning visitors about the risk of dehydration and sharing cautionary tales of unprepared hikers who have lost their lives in the past.

This recent death marks the sixth fatality reported in Grand Canyon National Park since July 31, according to previous park news releases. Among the other unfortunate incidents included an 80-year-old man who died when his boat capsized in a river, the body of a 33-year-old woman found after a flash flood, and a 20-year-old woman found 150 feet below an overlook.

Disturbingly, this year alone, at least 14 deaths have occurred in Grand Canyon National Park, with six fatalities reported over two separate weeklong periods during the summer. In 2019, the park witnessed a total of 10 deaths, while approximately 4.7 million people visited the park, according to the Park Service.

The authorities continue to emphasize the importance of preparedness and caution while exploring the vast beauty of Grand Canyon National Park, urging visitors to stay hydrated and well-equipped for the challenges the park presents.
