In a recent update, city leaders in Sioux Falls provided details on the response to a devastating flash flood that struck the city and surrounding areas after hours of relentless rainfall. As a result of the severe situation, an emergency declaration was issued by the City of Sioux Falls on Saturday morning.

This emergency declaration will enable the city to swiftly gather the necessary resources needed to support the ongoing emergency response efforts. Residents were also urged to take precautions and limit wastewater usage in order to alleviate strain on the city's overwhelmed wastewater collection and treatment center, which is currently operating at or near maximum capacity.

To ensure public safety, several measures were advised to residents. In case of a life-threatening emergency, residents were reminded to promptly dial 911. For non-emergency concerns, the city requested individuals to contact 211. Moreover, motorists were cautioned to exercise caution and turn around if they encountered water on the road. It was emphasized that road barricades should be respected and not circumvented, as they indicate road and park closures. Additionally, residents were advised to maintain a safe distance from rushing water and adhere to any posted safety signage.

As the situation worsened, several parks, roads, and even the Caille Branch Library near the intersection of 49th Street and Oxbow Avenue were closed for public safety on Saturday. Updates on these closures and additional flood-related resources can be accessed at SiouxFalls.gov/Flood. To report potential sewer backup incidents, residents were encouraged to call the 211 Helpline.
