In a display of incredible determination and skill, Simone Biles will be taking part in all four apparatuses of the Paris Olympics team final, despite dealing with a minor calf injury during the qualifying round. The announcement came from USA Gymnastics on Monday evening, as they revealed the team's lineups for the upcoming competition.
Biles' coach, Cecile Landi, shared that during warm-ups before the floor routine, Biles experienced pain in her calf, which was a recurring issue from a couple of weeks ago. However, Biles never considered withdrawing and went on to finish the meet with an outstanding performance, soaring to the top of the all-around standings.
With Biles leading the charge, the U.S. team secured an impressive overall score, placing them over five points ahead of second-place Italy. Although scores do not carry over to the team final, the U.S. women have room for error thanks to their difficult routines and Biles' dominance.
Prior to the competition, there was speculation that Biles might perform on fewer apparatuses to ease the pressure on her. Biles' weakest event, bars, was considered a potential skip. However, it has been confirmed that Biles will participate in all four lineups, giving her the opportunity to showcase a new element on bars. If successful, this element will be named after her.
Jade Carey, the reigning Olympic gold medalist on floor, will only be competing in the vault lineup for the team final due to feeling unwell. In contrast, Jordan Chiles will be in the lineup on every apparatus. Chiles narrowly missed out on qualifying for the all-around final, finishing fourth overall.
In terms of the U.S. team lineup for the final, Sunisa Lee will compete on bars, beam, and floor. Meanwhile, Hezly Rivera, who struggled on beam during the qualifying round, will not be competing at all. The U.S. staff heavily considered the results from the qualifying round when determining the lineups for the team final.
The Paris Olympics have been filled with incredible performances, and the presence of top athletes like Noah Lyles, Simone Biles, and Katie Ledecky has been highly anticipated. However, it's worth noting that some familiar faces are missing from this year's competition.
Despite facing a minor calf injury, Simone Biles has shown resilience and determination, demonstrating her commitment to her team and the pursuit of a gold medal. Fans around the world eagerly await her performances in the upcoming team final, where Biles will once again prove why she is hailed as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time.
