The 2024 U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Team Trials kicked off with a mix of excitement and unexpected twists for the women's competition. Simone Biles, a seven-time Olympic medalist, has emerged as the frontrunner after the first night of competition with a score of 58.900. Although it wasn't her best performance, Biles displayed her mastery and maintained a comfortable lead over the rest of the field.

Joining Biles in the top four are her Tokyo Olympic teammates, showcasing their continued skill and determination. Jordan Chiles impressed with a strong start and secured second place with a score of 56.400. Reigning Olympic all-around champion Suni Lee, who has made a remarkable recovery from kidney disease, finished the day in third place with a score of 56.025. Meanwhile, reigning Olympic floor champion Jade Carey delivered one of the best all-around meets of her career, currently sitting in fourth place with a score of 55.825.

Prior to the competition, some of the top contenders suffered unfortunate injuries. Shilese Jones, the world all-around bronze medalist, took a fall during warm-ups and appeared to injure her knee. She participated in the uneven bars rotation but ultimately withdrew from the rest of the competition. Another Tokyo Olympics alternate, Kayla DiCello, suffered a torn Achilles on vault at the start of the competition and had to withdraw. Skye Blakely, a two-time world team champion, also sustained a torn Achilles during training a few days prior to the event.

Simone Biles showcased her versatility by starting her evening on the uneven bars, typically considered her weaker event. Despite a small hop on the landing, Biles delivered a clean routine and received a score of 14.425. Suni Lee began the competition on vault, where she faced a slip but managed to complete her Yurchenko double twist and land on her feet, earning a score of 13.525. Leanne Wong, a Tokyo Olympics alternate, introduced a new vault known as the Cheng. Despite a minor step back, her impressive difficulty level may enhance her chances of making the team. Initially, Wong was deducted two points for not getting enough support on both hands when contacting the table, but after a judges review, her score was raised from 12.450 to 14.450.

Jordan Chiles showcased her strength with an impressive bar routine, scoring 14.350 and starting her competition on a high note.

The first day of the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Team Trials proved to be an eventful one, with Simone Biles leading the all-around standings. As the competition unfolds, the gymnasts will continue to strive for excellence and edge closer to realizing their lifelong dreams of representing the nation on the Olympic stage.
