In a highly anticipated Freeway Series game on Friday night, Shohei Ohtani dazzled the crowd with a mammoth two-run home run that opened the scoring in the fifth inning. However, his efforts were in vain as the Los Angeles Dodgers couldn't muster any further offense, ultimately losing to the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 in 10 innings at Dodger Stadium.
Despite Ohtani's remarkable performance, which included two hits, two walks, and two RBIs, the rest of the Dodgers' lineup failed to contribute significantly. Ohtani's former team, the Angels, who had often squandered his outstanding performances during his time with them, were all too familiar with the feeling of relying solely on his brilliance.
The Dodgers, missing key players such as Mookie Betts and Will Smith, heavily relied on Ohtani throughout the game. Despite a forearm injury to Angels pitcher Patrick Sandoval that forced an early bullpen appearance, the Dodgers struggled to threaten the Angels for most of the game. They failed to put a runner in scoring position until the 10th inning when an automatic runner started at second base.
By then, the Angels had already erased the Dodgers' two-run lead, scoring twice off reliever Ryan Yarbrough in the sixth inning. Yarbrough, although sporting a solid 3.28 ERA this season, struggled with walks and hit batsmen during the game, which was uncharacteristic of him according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
Rookie right-hander Landon Knack, who was called up for a spot start, delivered an impressive performance, pitching five scoreless innings and lowering his ERA to 2.10. However, it remains uncertain if Knack will remain in the Dodgers' rotation moving forward, considering they have upcoming off days and a short-handed pitching staff.
In the top of the 10th inning, the Angels finally took the lead with an RBI single from Taylor Ward, securing a hard-fought victory. The Dodgers had a chance to respond in the bottom of the inning but failed to advance their automatic runner from third base.
This loss marked the end of a 10-game winning streak against the Angels, a Freeway Series record that dated back to 2021. Unfortunately for Ohtani, he has been on the losing side in all those games, with his exceptional performances often going unrewarded.
Nonetheless, Ohtani continues to excel this season, living up to the expectations of his 10-year, $700-million contract with the Dodgers. With his National League-leading 22nd home run, including seven in his last 11 games, Ohtani has solidified his position as one of the best players in the league. His OPS of 1.026, trailing only Aaron Judge, further showcases his incredible offensive prowess.
Reflecting on his recent success at the plate, Ohtani credited his stabilized stance and improved strike zone recognition for his performance. His contributions on both sides of the game have certainly played a significant role in propelling the contending Angels towards a potential postseason berth, as they currently hold the best betting odds to win the World Series.
While Ohtani's individual brilliance shone bright, it was not enough to secure a victory for the Dodgers on Friday night. As the Freeway Series rivalry continues, both teams will look to regroup and strategize for future matchups, hoping for different outcomes in the red and blue city showdown.
