In a disappointing turn of events, six-time world medalist Shilese Jones has announced her withdrawal from this weekend's U.S. Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. Jones, who is in contention for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team, cited a shoulder injury as the reason for her decision.

Just two weeks ago, at the Core Hydration Classic, Jones proved herself as Team USA's strongest asset behind Simone Biles. She finished second in the all-around competition and claimed victory in the uneven bars. However, her shoulder injury began to act up after the competition and has hindered her ability to compete at her full potential.

Expressing her disappointment, Jones stated, "Unfortunately, I won't be participating in the Xfinity Championships this year. With Paris as my ultimate focus, it's best for me to prioritize recovery and resting my shoulder this weekend." She assured reporters that both she and the medical team are confident that this is the right decision to ensure her full strength for the upcoming Olympic Trials.

The U.S. gymnasts who will represent the country in Paris will be selected at the Olympic Trials, scheduled to take place from June 27-30 in Minneapolis. While the U.S. Championships serve as the official qualifying event, athletes have the option to file a petition with USA Gymnastics if they are unable to compete due to injury or extenuating circumstances.

Jones has expressed her intention to file a petition to compete at the Olympic Trials. If her petition is accepted, she will join the top-two finishers in the all-around competition at the U.S. Championships, who automatically secure a berth to the Trials. The remaining spots for the Olympic Trials will be determined by a selection committee after the conclusion of the second day of competition on Sunday.

Despite her setback, Jones remains optimistic and eager to support her fellow athletes and teammates this weekend. Her focus now lies on her recovery and regaining full strength for the Trials, where she hopes to secure her place on the U.S. Olympic team.

The gymnastics community awaits the outcome of Jones' petition and wishes her a speedy recovery as she continues her journey towards the Paris Olympics.
