The San Jose Sharks are wasting no time in making moves ahead of the 2024 NHL Draft. General Manager Mike Grier announced on Thursday that the Sharks have acquired the No. 11 overall pick from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for their No. 14 and No. 42 selections.
With this new acquisition, the Sharks now have a total of nine scheduled picks in the upcoming two-day draft, including the coveted No. 1 overall pick. The draft is set to begin on Friday at 4 p.m. PT in Las Vegas.
In a separate deal, Grier also revealed that the team has traded defenseman Kyle Burroughs to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for forward Carl Grundstrom. Grundstrom, 26, brings valuable experience to the Sharks, having played in 236 NHL games and tallying 67 points (40 goals, 27 assists) throughout his career.
Grundstrom's contributions to the Kings last season were notable, as he registered 12 points, including eight goals and four assists, in 50 games. The forward also had a strong 2022-23 campaign, setting career highs in all scoring categories with 19 points, 12 goals, and seven assists in 57 games.
Originally selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2016 NHL Draft, the 6-foot, 200-pound forward from Sweden will now don the teal and black of the San Jose Sharks.
On the other side of the trade, defenseman Kyle Burroughs, who was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 2013 NHL Draft, signed with the Sharks last July. While his time with the Sharks was short-lived, Burroughs has also played for the Colorado Avalanche and Vancouver Canucks in his NHL career.
These recent moves by the Sharks indicate their determination to bolster their roster ahead of the upcoming season. With an arsenal of draft picks and the addition of a skilled forward in Grundstrom, the Sharks aim to make a significant impact in the highly anticipated NHL Draft.
