In an exhilarating Big Ten tournament championship game, No. 13 Illinois secured the conference title with a hard-fought 93-87 win over Wisconsin. Terrence Shannon Jr. showcased his scoring prowess, notching an impressive 34 points on an exceptional 15-for-17 shooting from the free-throw line.
The Illini (26-8) delivered a dominant performance, with Marcus Domask contributing 26 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds, while Dain Dainja added nine points and seven rebounds. Illinois showcased their ability to execute under pressure, shooting 16 of 26 from the field in the second half.
On the Wisconsin side, A.J. Storr led the way with 24 points, followed closely by Chucky Hepburn with 20 points. However, the Badgers (22-13) struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 7 for 20 from 3-point range, a significant drop compared to their performance in their first three tournament games.
Shannon's outstanding display throughout the tournament earned him the well-deserved title of Most Outstanding Player. In total, he amassed an impressive 102 points in three games, falling just short of the Big Ten Tournament scoring record of 103 set by Keegan Murray of Iowa in 2022, who played four games during their championship run.
Following their victory, the Illini celebrated with orange-and-blue confetti and net-cutting festivities at Target Center. Their attention quickly shifted to the NCAA Tournament selection show, where they were announced as the No. 3 seed in the East Region. Their first-round matchup will be against Morehead State on Friday.
Wisconsin, on the other hand, secured the No. 5 seed in the South Region and will face James Madison in their opening game.
Despite his on-court success, Shannon continues to face his off-court legal challenge. Shannon is currently facing a rape charge in Kansas for an alleged incident last year. Despite a school-issued suspension, a federal judge overruled the suspension after six games.
Throughout the tournament, Wisconsin fans taunted Shannon, yet he remained unfazed, demonstrating his cool demeanor by responding with stellar plays. He even blew a kiss to the crowd after sinking a 3-pointer to give Illinois a 41-40 lead at halftime.
The game remained closely contested, with Wisconsin taking a 61-51 lead thanks to Chucky Hepburn's three-point play. However, Illinois mounted an impressive 21-5 run over six minutes, ensuring a tight game until the end.
In the crucial moments, Shannon's scoring prowess proved decisive. He knocked down a deep 3-pointer to give Illinois an 88-85 lead with 88 seconds left. He then stole the ball, drew a foul, and sank both free throws, extending the lead to five points.
Hepburn played a critical role in Wisconsin's semifinal victory over Purdue, reaching the 1,000-point milestone and contributing on both ends of the court. However, his efforts were not enough to secure the championship title for the Badgers.
Illinois now boasts the most victories in the Big Ten over the past five seasons and matches their most wins since the 2005-06 season, with 26 victories.
This championship clash was a rematch of a regular-season matchup, where Illinois emerged victorious with a 91-83 win fueled by Marcus Domask's exceptional 31 points. Both teams were making their eighth appearance in the conference title game, a significant feat in itself, with the event being staged for the 26th time, second only to Ohio State's nine appearances.
