In what has been the most active severe weather year in over a decade, parts of Texas, Louisiana, and Florida are bracing themselves for climbing temperatures and the threat of damaging winds, hail, and even tornadoes on Memorial Day.
Sunday saw the highest level of severe storm activity so far this year, with at least 576 severe storm reports. In total, the United States has experienced 5,205 severe weather reports in 2024, marking it as the most active year since 2011.
Since last Friday, 72 tornadoes have been reported across 12 states, including Wisconsin, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, North Dakota, and North Carolina. A tornado watch remains in effect until 8 a.m. Monday for the South, where the possibility of a few tornadoes still exists.
As severe weather moves towards the East Coast and Southeast U.S., major cities such as New York City, Philadelphia, D.C., Raleigh, Charleston, Atlanta, and Montgomery are expected to be impacted. Damaging winds and large hail pose the main threats; however, the risk of tornadoes cannot be ruled out, particularly from Pennsylvania to North Carolina, including cities like Philadelphia, D.C., Richmond, and Raleigh.
Record-breaking heat continues to plague the South, with Sunday seeing more historic highs. Del Rio, Texas hit a scorching 112 degrees, while Abilene, Texas tied its record of 102 degrees. In Florida, West Palm Beach reached 98 degrees, and both Fort Lauderdale and Miami experienced temperatures of 96 degrees.
Monday is expected to bring even more record heat, as an excessive heat warning has been issued for Houston, the first time ever in May. The city could see highs of 98 degrees, with a heat index making it feel closer to 114. New Orleans, Louisiana, has a heat advisory in place, with temperatures feeling like 108 degrees despite an expected temperature of about 93 degrees. Melbourne, Florida, is also anticipating temperatures nearing 95 degrees.
Residents in the affected areas are urged to take necessary precautions to stay safe during the severe weather conditions and extreme heat. Stay informed through local weather updates and follow any advisories or warnings issued by authorities.
