Houston residents are urged to remain vigilant as the National Weather Service has extended the flood watch for Southeast Texas through Sunday evening. With heavy rainfall expected over the weekend, the region is at risk of experiencing severe flooding.
According to the weather reports, an additional 1-3 inches of rain, with isolated higher amounts, are forecasted for Saturday night into Sunday morning. The already saturated soils in the area mean that even a relatively small amount of rainfall can cause significant impacts and exacerbate existing flooding. Excessive runoff has already caused rises in rivers, creeks, and streams throughout the region.
The situation remains dire, with moderate to major flooding expected both today and throughout the upcoming week. Multiple county and farm-to-market roads are already inundated, and several rivers, including the Trinity River, San Jacinto River, and Brazos River, are experiencing flooding in the Navasota/Normangee area. Residents living in flood-prone areas are urged to be prepared to take necessary action should flooding occur and to stay informed about the changing weather conditions.
Authorities have issued a warning to avoid parking near streams, rivers, and creeks, as well as to never drive around barriers, as dangerous conditions persist. The high water levels pose a significant threat to personal safety, as floodwaters can carry not only individuals away but also hide various hazards that can lead to illness, injury, and even death. It is crucial to prioritize safety and avoid any unnecessary exposure to floodwaters, especially for children who should not be allowed to play in these hazardous conditions.
While the chance of showers overnight tonight is relatively low at 20%, there is a possibility of more heavy thunderstorms on Saturday morning, which may further exacerbate flooding in certain parts of Southeast Texas. The highest risk for flooding on Saturday is anticipated to be northwest of Houston.
The region faces the potential for two more rounds of thunderstorms on Sunday, with the first round expected to move through in the morning, bringing with it lightning and heavy downpours. The second round is predicted to occur in the afternoon, and once again, there is a risk of flooding.
Looking ahead, a hotter weather pattern is expected next week, with the first 90° day of the year anticipated. However, there is also a possibility of a cool front moving through on Friday, which could bring drier air and slightly lower temperatures.
As weather conditions remain erratic and the risk of flooding persists, residents of Houston and the surrounding areas are urged to stay informed, remain weather aware, and take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of their loved ones.
