In a weather update from KOCO 5 Chief Meteorologist Damon Lane, parts of Oklahoma are bracing for severe storms on Sunday, with the possibility of large hail, strong winds, and even tornadoes. Residents are urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions as the day progresses.

The latest update at 2:40 p.m. reveals that a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for several Oklahoma counties until 10 p.m. These counties include Grant, Alfalfa, Dewey, Ellis, Harper, Major, Woods, Woodward, Roger Mills, Texas, and Beaver. Northwest Oklahoma, specifically, may experience hail as large as baseballs and winds reaching speeds of up to 90 mph.

A significant development occurred in the morning update at 10 a.m. when the chance for severe storms was upgraded and expanded to include the Oklahoma City metro. KOCO 5 Meteorologist Taylor Cox indicates that northwest parts of the state, including Alva and Woodward, now face a level-three enhanced risk for severe weather on a 1-5 scale. Additionally, areas in west and north Oklahoma will see a level-two slight risk, while the Oklahoma City area, Hobart, and Tulsa will face a level-one marginal risk for severe weather.

Potential hazards associated with these storms include winds with speeds of up to 80 mph. Northwestern Oklahoma may also be prone to isolated hail, with sizes comparable to baseballs. Further analysis reveals that places like Alva and Woodward will experience a tornado index of 4 on a scale of 1-10, indicating a moderate tornado threat. Areas including Enid and Ponca City will face a tornado index of 2, signaling a slight risk of tornadic activity.

The onset of isolated storms is expected to commence in western Oklahoma around 4 p.m. As the system progresses eastward, it is anticipated that the storms may weaken in intensity, particularly in the southern regions of the state. However, residents throughout Oklahoma are advised to remain vigilant and stay updated on the latest developments.
