### Tropical Storm Sara Hits Belize, Threatens Life-Threatening Flooding and Mudslides

Tropical Storm Sara struck Belize on Sunday, prompting urgent warnings from forecasters about heavy rain that could lead to severe flash floods and mudslides. Having already drenched the northern coast of Honduras since Friday, the storm had caused rivers to swell and left several residents stranded in their homes.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center’s warning as of Sunday extended to the Caribbean coast of Guatemala, the coast of Belize, and northward to the coast of Mexico's Quintana Roo state, covering areas from Chetumal to Puerto Costa Maya. The affected regions, including parts of El Salvador and western Nicaragua, could experience up to 5 inches (13 cm) of rainfall, with localized areas reaching as much as 15 inches (38 cm).

“These conditions are expected to result in areas of flash flooding, potentially significant, along with the possibility of mudslides,” reported the Hurricane Center. In addition, a storm surge could increase water levels by 1 to 3 feet above ground level near and north of where Sara makes landfall in Belize, accompanied by large and destructive waves.

Despite moving inland, northern Honduras remains at risk. The Hurricane Center forecasts up to 3 inches (8 cm) of rain, with some spots potentially receiving a staggering 40 inches (1 meter), leading to "catastrophic and life-threatening flooding.”
