In a recent announcement, FC Barcelona has confirmed the transfer of player Sergino Dest to PSV Eindhoven. The official statement, shared on social media and published on the club's website, revealed the details of the agreement between the two clubs.
According to the statement, FC Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven have reached an agreement for the transfer of Sergino Dest. Although the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, it was revealed that Barcelona will retain a percentage of any future sale of the player. This suggests that Barcelona did not receive any immediate financial compensation for Dest's transfer.
Dest, who arrived at Barcelona in 2020 from Ajax, made history by becoming the first-ever USA international to play for the blaugranes. The 20-year-old defender was signed for a fee of €21 million, with an additional €5 million in variables.
During his time at Barcelona, Dest made a total of 72 appearances, with 56 of those coming as a starter. He scored three goals and provided four assists for the team. Dest was also part of the squad that claimed a Copa del Rey title in two seasons.
However, Dest's time at Barcelona was cut short as he spent the last two seasons out on loan. In the 2022/23 season, he played for AC Milan, making 14 appearances. He then joined PSV Eindhoven for the 2023/24 season, where he made 34 appearances.
Dest's departure from Barcelona coincided with the signing of Joao Cancelo from Manchester City on a temporary assignment. Barcelona will aim to make Cancelo's move permanent this summer.
It is worth mentioning that PSV Eindhoven had previously turned down the option to buy Dest for €11 million after he suffered an ACL injury in May. The injury was reported to potentially sideline him for up to nine months.
Despite not receiving a transfer fee for Dest, Barcelona benefits from offloading the player by reducing their wage bill. This move will help the club to balance their finances and work towards complying with Financial Fair Play regulations.
As Sergino Dest begins a new chapter at PSV Eindhoven, it remains to be seen how he will contribute to the Dutch club's success on the field.
