A group of 13 Senate Republicans, led by Senators Mike Lee, Ted Cruz, and Marsha Blackburn, are urging for a comprehensive impeachment trial against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The House recently voted to impeach Mayorkas under two articles, accusing him of "willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law" and a "breach of public trust." This marks the first time in nearly 150 years that a Cabinet secretary has faced impeachment.
Despite the push from Senate Republicans, the effort is likely to be quickly dismissed by the Democratic majority in the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's office announced that Mayorkas' impeachment trial will commence when senators return to Washington on February 26th. Democratic Senator Patty Murray is set to preside over the trial as Senate pro tempore.
Some Senate Republicans have expressed concerns that the Democratic majority may move to table the articles of impeachment once the trial begins. However, given the Democrats' control of 51 seats, including three Democratic-leaning independents, Republicans may have limited options to oppose the majority's decisions.
In response to the planned proceedings, Senator Rick Scott has written to Vice President Kamala Harris, urging her to oversee the impeachment trial of Secretary Mayorkas instead of Senator Murray. Scott highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by states and cities due to the influx of illegal immigrants and emphasized Harris' role as the President of the Senate in supervising the trial.
The Senate is set to deliberate on the impeachment trial process in the coming weeks, with discussions ongoing on how to proceed with the trial. While the outcome in the Senate seems predetermined, Senate Republicans are citing the importance of upholding their Constitutional duty and holding a trial against Secretary Mayorkas.
