The Seattle Seahawks wrapped up their mandatory minicamp with a day to spare, but not without a few injury setbacks. However, there were also positive developments, as second-year right guard Anthony Bradford returned to practice, adding to the competition for the starting job.
Bradford had been dealing with an ankle tweak during OTAs but managed to participate in Wednesday's practice. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald expressed his satisfaction with Bradford's progress and noted that he would be in the running for the starting position. Having started 10 games as a rookie, Bradford is seen as a strong contender for the role. Macdonald emphasized the intense competition on the right side of the offensive line and indicated that Bradford has a great opportunity to secure his spot.
Meanwhile, rookie Christian Haynes has been holding the second-team position at right guard, while Laken Tomlinson has been given the nod for the left guard spot on the first team.
On the injury front, second-year wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba left Wednesday's practice early due to a shoulder injury. Nevertheless, Coach Macdonald reassured that it wasn't a major concern and they played it safe by letting him rest. Similarly, free agent acquisition Laviska Shenault Jr exited the practice early due to a foot injury. Macdonald expressed no significant concerns regarding Shenault's injury either.
The Seahawks are prioritizing caution with their players' health to ensure they are ready for the upcoming season. This approach was evident when second-year defensive tackle Cameron Young, who is vying for a roster spot as part of the team's interior defensive line rotation, was kept out of both minicamp practices due to a lower body injury.
In addition, right tackle George Fant did not participate in Wednesday's practice as he continues to recover from an undisclosed condition. Coach Macdonald clarified that it was a load management situation, and Raiqwon O'Neal stepped in to take right tackle snaps.
As the Seahawks conclude their minicamp, they are navigating through some minor injuries but remain optimistic about their roster and the competition for crucial starting positions. The team will continue to monitor the progress of their players and prioritize their health and well-being leading up to the start of the regular season.
