Seattle Kraken Sign Defenseman Montour and Center Stephenson to Seven-Year Contracts

The Seattle Kraken made big moves in their quest for success, signing defenseman Brandon Montour and center Chandler Stephenson to lucrative seven-year contracts. The signings significantly bolster the Kraken's roster as they prepare for their second season in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Montour, who won the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers last season, finalized a seven-year deal worth $50 million, with an average annual value of $7.14 million. The defenseman had an impressive 33 points, including eight goals and 25 assists, in 66 regular-season games for the Panthers. He also contributed 11 points, with three goals and eight assists, during the Panthers' playoff run.

Expressing his excitement about joining the Kraken, Montour acknowledged the passion of Seattle's sports city and the team's determination to win. He noted their impressive performance just two years ago, falling just short of reaching the conference finals. Montour had a remarkable season in 2022-23, achieving career-highs in goals (16), assists (57), and points (73) in 80 games for the Panthers.

Stephenson, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2020 and the Washington Capitals in 2017-18, signed a seven-year contract with an annual average value of $6.25 million. The center posted 51 points, including 16 goals and 35 assists, in 75 regular-season games last season. He also recorded one assist in seven playoff games.

These signings add valuable depth and experience to the Seattle Kraken's lineup. Montour's proven winning track record and offensive capabilities are expected to make a significant impact on the team's performance. Meanwhile, Stephenson's championship experience and consistent production will further strengthen the Kraken's forward lines.

Both players bring extensive NHL experience to the table. Montour has accumulated 252 points, including 66 goals and 186 assists, in 520 regular-season games with the Panthers, Buffalo Sabres, and Anaheim Ducks. He has also recorded 35 points, with 11 goals and 24 assists, in 82 playoff appearances. Stephenson has 270 points, comprising 89 goals and 181 assists, in 495 regular-season games with the Capitals and Golden Knights. Additionally, he has contributed 39 points, including 15 goals and 24 assists, in 95 playoff contests.

Kraken general manager Ron Francis expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisitions, highlighting Montour's winning mentality and Stephenson's playmaking ability. The Kraken organization is eagerly anticipating their debut performances in front of their passionate fan base, whom they believe to be the best in the NHL.
