A search and rescue operation is currently underway for three skiers who went missing in an avalanche on Lone Peak near Salt Lake City, according to the Unified Police Department of Salt Lake City. The skiers are believed to have been buried by the avalanche in the backcountry, as reported by local police.

This avalanche comes as a shock, as large and dangerous avalanches are rare during this late stage of the ski season. Normally, the snowpack is stabilized by the daytime warmth. However, recent weather conditions have changed the circumstances, raising the danger level dramatically. A recent storm dumped approximately 30 inches of snow, causing instability in the area, according to Craig Gordon from the Utah Avalanche Center.

The search and rescue efforts are further complicated by the steep and technical terrain on the north side of Lone Peak. This region poses a challenge for rescue teams who are working tirelessly to locate the missing skiers.

In response to the situation, Alta Ski Area, with its abundant resources, has dispatched a ski patroller and an avalanche rescue dog to aid in the search and rescue efforts. Their expertise and assistance will be invaluable in the attempt to locate the missing skiers.

As this is a developing story, updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
