## Sardinian Village Offers American Expats $1 Homes Post-U.S. Elections

In an effort to rejuvenate its community and attract American expatriates, the village of Ollolai on the Italian island of Sardinia is offering dilapidated homes for as little as one euro, or approximately $1. This initiative, which started in 2018, has gained renewed momentum following the 2024 U.S. presidential election, leading to the launch of a dedicated website aimed explicitly at appealing to Americans looking for a fresh start abroad.

The recently launched website pitches the picturesque Sardinian village as an ideal spot for those weary of global politics and eager to embrace a more balanced lifestyle. “Are you worn out by global politics? Looking to embrace a more balanced lifestyle while securing new opportunities?” the website asks. “It's time to start building your European escape in the stunning paradise of Sardinia."

Francesco Columbu, the mayor of Ollolai, explained to CNN that the website and the renewed effort are tailored to Americans following the latest U.S. elections. Without directly naming any political figures, Columbu hinted that recent political developments in the United States have spurred a desire among many Americans to relocate. "We have specifically created this website now to meet U.S. post-elections relocation needs," Columbu stated.

Since the first launch of this digital nomad scheme in 2018, Ollolai has sold 10 homes, and there are now about 100 more ready to be sold. The mayor noted that Americans are the primary target for this scheme due to their potential to significantly contribute to reviving the village. "We just really want, and will focus on, Americans above all. We can't of course ban people from other countries to apply, but Americans will have a fast-track procedure," he commented.

The village is offering three levels of accommodation: free temporary homes for certain digital nomads, one-euro homes in need of renovation, and ready-to-occupy houses priced up to 100,000 euros (or about $106,000). According to CNN reports, the response has been overwhelming, with over 35,000 inquiries, most of which have come from the U.S.

The homes are expected to be showcased on the website soon, complete with photographs and floor plans, providing potential buyers with a clearer understanding of what is available. Mayor Columbu is optimistic that this influx of American expats will be the key to reviving Ollolai's community, positioning them as their "winning card" in the village's rejuvenation efforts.
