In an effort to bolster their lineup for the upcoming season, the San Francisco 49ers have made significant changes to their roster. The team announced today that they have signed wide receiver Jontre Kirklin and running back Ke'Shawn Vaughn to one-year deals. However, in order to make room for these new additions, the 49ers have released safety Erik Harris and waived/injured wide receiver Terique Owens.
Jontre Kirklin, a 25-year-old Louisiana native, joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in May 2022. Throughout his career, Kirklin has spent time on the Cardinals' practice squad in 2022 and the New Orleans Saints' practice squad from 2022 to 2024. Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 184 pounds, Kirklin showcased his skills during his five seasons at Louisiana State University, appearing in 57 games and registering 20 receptions for 313 yards and three touchdowns, along with 13 carries for 67 yards.
Joining Kirklin on the 49ers is running back Ke'Shawn Vaughn, who was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The 27-year-old Tennessee native has amassed a four-year NFL career that includes 43 games played and one start. Vaughn has showcased his versatility in both the rushing and receiving game, accumulating 103 carries for 384 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, as well as 14 receptions for 81 yards and one touchdown through the air. In the 2023 season, Vaughn appeared in six games, registering 24 carries for 42 yards and two receptions for two yards.
In order to make these acquisitions possible, the San Francisco 49ers have had to part ways with safety Erik Harris. Harris, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound player, originally joined the team on November 28, 2023. Additionally, the team has waived/injured wide receiver Terique Owens, who originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 6, 2024. The roster changes demonstrate the 49ers' commitment to refining their roster and creating opportunities for emerging talent.
With the addition of Jontre Kirklin and Ke'Shawn Vaughn, the San Francisco 49ers hope to strengthen their offensive lineup and bring a new dynamic to their team. As the upcoming NFL season approaches, fans eagerly await the opportunity to see these new signings in action and anticipate the impact they will have on the 49ers' performance on the field.
