A Flash Flood Warning was issued by the National Weather Service for parts of the county, including the city of San Diego, where the San Diego Padres are set to play their third game of the season. The warning, however, expired at 11:30 a.m., bringing a sigh of relief to baseball fans.
Although widespread rainfall is still anticipated throughout the afternoon and evening, the weather service predicts that it should be more scattered. There is even a chance of isolated thunderstorms later in the day.
After careful consultation with Major League Baseball (MLB) and the weather service, the San Diego Padres announced that Saturday's game will proceed as scheduled. They expect the rain in the Petco Park area to significantly lessen before the first pitch is thrown.
Fans attending the game are advised to bring ponchos, collapsible umbrellas, towels, and blankets. However, large or golf umbrellas will not be allowed inside the stadium.
While rainouts are rare for Padres home games, and especially during opening weekend, history has shown that it is a possibility. Since the debut of Petco Park in 2004, there have been four rainouts out of a total of 19 for the team in San Diego.
The San Diego Padres currently hold a 1-1 record against the San Francisco Giants. They emerged victorious in the season opener with a 6-4 win but suffered an 8-3 defeat in the second game.
Weather permitting, fans can expect to witness an exciting showdown between the Padres and Giants in game three, despite the inclement weather conditions.
