Illegal fireworks illuminated the Sacramento sky on Fourth of July, causing fires in various areas and leaving behind a significant amount of debris. KCRA 3 conducted a two-hour investigation, revealing numerous piles of used illegal fireworks unceremoniously dumped on the sides of the city's streets. Sacramento considers this act as illegal dumping, prompting the city to call on its residents to report such instances.
Jesa David, representing the city's Recycling and Solid Waste Division, emphasized the importance of reporting these incidents. By doing so, the city becomes aware of the specific locations and can promptly arrange for cleanup procedures. "We want to be sure to be extra careful in disposing of those properly," David stated, highlighting the potential fire hazard presented by fireworks waste.
David advised that both used and unused fireworks should be soaked in water for at least 15 minutes before being wrapped in a plastic bag and placed in the garbage container. Taking these precautions significantly reduces the risk of potential fires. To report instances of illegal fireworks trash, residents are encouraged to call 311 or submit a report online.
In a promising development, those who effectively report such incidents leading to prosecution may be eligible for a reward. This initiative incentivizes residents to actively participate in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of their community.
The surge in illegal fireworks usage during Independence Day celebrations not only risks the destruction of property but also endangers the lives of Sacramento's citizens. Therefore, the city urges its residents to act responsibly and prioritize the proper disposal of fireworks debris to prevent any further mishaps.
