Sacramento Kings forward Sasha Vezenkov has reportedly informed the team that he does not intend to return for the second year of his contract, according to Eurohoops Greek journalist Mihalis Stefanou. The decision is currently "open," as Vezenkov considers whether to continue his basketball career in the NBA or return to Europe.
Vezenkov, who signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Kings, tested the waters in the NBA last season after impressing in the EuroLeague. However, his first year in the league proved to be challenging. He struggled to find consistent playing time, often finding himself in and out of head coach Mike Brown's rotation, resulting in nearly a dozen DNPs (Did Not Play). Additionally, he was plagued by back-to-back ankle injuries that forced him to miss around 30 games.
In the 42 games Vezenkov did play, he averaged 5.4 points on 44-percent shooting from the field and 37.5 percent from beyond the arc, along with 2.3 rebounds in 12.2 minutes per game. The young forward acknowledged the learning curve he faced in the NBA, expressing his desire to improve his defense and help the team succeed.
Although there were glimpses of progress throughout the season, as noted by coach Brown, Vezenkov's adjustment to the league takes time. Brown emphasized the sharpshooter's ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor and praised his work ethic. While his offensive skills were recognized, Vezenkov's contributions in rebounding and defensive positioning often went unnoticed on the stat sheet.
Prior to his NBA endeavor, Vezenkov showcased his abilities in the EuroLeague, averaging 17.2 points while shooting an impressive 53.8 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three-point range in 38 games for Olympiacos. His performances ranked him second in rebounds and two-point shots made in the league.
Although Vezenkov reportedly desires to depart from the NBA at this time, the decision ultimately rests with the Sacramento Kings. They would need to waive him, as he holds a guaranteed year at $6.6 million for the 2024-2025 season, with a team option for the following season at $6.9 million.
While Vezenkov's EuroLeague success did not directly translate to the NBA, he consistently demonstrated heart and effort whenever his number was called upon. As Vezenkov contemplates his future, he faces a difficult decision that will shape the next chapter of his basketball career. The Kings' management, led by General Manager Monte McNair, will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in guiding Vezenkov's path.
