In North Sulawesi province, Indonesia, the Ruang volcano has erupted several times, resulting in the evacuation of at least 800 residents due to the emission of lava and ash clouds into the sky. The eruption has caused authorities to raise the alert level to Orange, the second-highest level, as reported by the Multiplatform Application for Geohazard Mitigation and Assessment in Indonesia (MAGMA Indonesia).
Located about 62 miles from the provincial capital Manado, the Ruang volcano erupted multiple times since Tuesday, displaying an active crater with a bright red glow into the dark sky. Video footage shared by Indonesia's National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) showed people being evacuated from a ferry, offering a glimpse of the volcanic activity in the distance.
According to Abdul Muhari, the head of BNPB's Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, communities around Mount Ruang, as well as visitors and tourists, have been advised to remain cautious and avoid entering a radius of more than two miles from the center of the active crater. Muhari emphasized the importance of staying calm, carrying out daily activities as usual, and not being influenced by rumors about the eruption.
The recent increased activity of the Ruang volcano is believed to be triggered by recent earthquakes on the island. Due to Indonesia's geographical location, straddling the "Pacific Ring of Fire," characterized by intense seismic activity, the country is prone to volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis. As a result, it is considered one of the most seismically active countries in the world, with a high risk of natural disasters.
In response to the situation, authorities have swiftly evacuated 828 people from Pumpente Village and Pathology Village in the Tagulandang District. The National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) and local agencies are closely monitoring the situation and providing assistance to those affected.
The eruption of the Ruang volcano serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Indonesia in managing and mitigating natural disasters. The government and relevant agencies continue to work towards enhancing preparedness, response, and recovery measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
As the situation unfolds, it is crucial for residents and visitors around Mount Ruang to stay updated with official announcements and adhere to the guidance provided by authorities to minimize the potential risks posed by the volcanic activity.
