In a remarkable display of strength and determination, Primož Roglič has secured his fifteenth stage victory in the Vuelta a España, solidifying his position as the new race leader. The Slovenian rider delivered an outstanding pure climbing performance on the formidable Alto de Moncalvillo, showcasing his prowess on the demanding ascent.

Having previously triumphed on this challenging route in the 2020 edition of La Vuelta, Roglič faced an intensified competition from the top GC contenders this time around. However, that did not deter him from unleashing his full potential on a day that presented favorable conditions.

Supported by the Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe mountain train, Roglič benefited from an impressive display of team effort as they set a blistering pace, causing the peloton to fragment into a single-file formation. With six kilometers to go, Roglič, along with Dani Martínez and Aleksandr Vlasov, managed to establish a significant gap from the GC group, leaving their rivals struggling in their wake.

As attacks ensued from formidable competitors such as David Gaudu, Richard Carapaz, and Enric Mas, Roglič remained composed and displayed his tactical acumen. Setting his own rhythm, he embarked on a solitary ride with just 4.9 kilometers remaining. With each pedal stroke, Roglič further solidified his dominance, securing a victory that would propel him into the coveted race leader position.

Crossing the finish line with a remarkable feat, Roglič completed the climb in an astonishing time of 23 minutes and 55 seconds, pushing himself to the limit with an impressive 6.97 ᵉW/Kg. This marked his best-ever climbing performance when adjusted for altitude, surpassing his previous record set in the 2020 edition of La Vuelta by a staggering 58 seconds.

Enric Mas proved to be the second-strongest rider of the day, exhibiting his own impressive form by pushing 6.68 ᵉW/Kg, completing the climb in 24 minutes and 45 seconds. David Gaudu also showcased his tremendous improvement, finishing 2 minutes and 39 seconds earlier than his 2020 effort, pushing himself to 6.65 ᵉW/Kg.

While Roglič's outstanding performance undoubtedly solidified his position as a formidable contender, it is worth noting that comparisons to Remco Evenepoel's performance on Plateau de Beille indicate that, perhaps, Roglič still has a way to go to challenge riders of that caliber in competitions like the Tour de France.

Nonetheless, the 2024 edition of the Vuelta a España has witnessed a marked leap in cycling performance, with a multitude of riders demonstrating their extraordinary strength and ability. As Roglič assumes the race lead, all eyes will now turn to the upcoming stages, particularly the significant climbing challenges that lie ahead. Can Roglič maintain his position and fend off the fierce competition? Only time will tell as the race continues to unfold.

In the pursuit of surpassing his own limits, this triumph serves as a testament to Roglič's unwavering commitment and relentless pursuit of excellence. With each passing stage, the cycling world eagerly awaits the next thrilling development in the gripping battle for victory at La Vuelta.
