A retired Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, Albert Calibet, has gone missing while hiking on the island of Amorgos in Greece amidst a scorching heat wave. The 59-year-old disappeared on Tuesday while following a route towards the village of Katapola, as reported by the Amorgos municipality on its official social media.

Authorities have confirmed that a missing persons report has been filed, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau is now handling the case both locally and in coordination with international efforts. Greek authorities have already deployed search and rescue teams to assist in the search for Calibet.

"We are actively collaborating with multiple agencies abroad to provide assistance in the search for Deputy Calibet and will use every resource we have available to bring him back to those who love him," Sheriff Robert Luna stated, expressing solidarity with Calibet's family and friends.

According to Popi Despotidi, Amorgos' deputy mayor of tourism, Calibet has been visiting the island almost every year for the past decade. Calibet's friend, Robin Winston, mentioned that he was on a well-traveled path and was supposed to meet a friend at the end of it. However, he never arrived, prompting his friend to report him missing after unsuccessful attempts to reach him by phone.

The search area has been narrowed down as new information revealed that Calibet was seen on the path an hour after he was supposed to meet his friend. With this update, efforts are concentrated on the five-hour trail in hopes of finding any leads or clues regarding his whereabouts.

Calibet's brother, who also resides in Southern California, is en route to Greece to assist in the search, further highlighting the seriousness and concern surrounding his disappearance.

In a separate incident on the island of Samos, a 74-year-old Dutch tourist has also gone missing since Sunday. Authorities have initiated a large-scale search and rescue operation, involving police, fire brigade, volunteers, and even aerial efforts. The authorities are yet to receive any news about the missing tourist.

These recent disappearances come just days after the tragic discovery of British TV personality Michael Mosley, who vanished while walking in extreme temperatures on the Greek island of Symi. Mosley's body was found several days after his reported disappearance.

Greece is currently enduring a blistering heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 104 Fahrenheit across central and southern regions, including greater Athens, Cyclades, and Crete. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service has issued an orange warning for the heatwave, the second-most serious designation.

As a result, authorities have taken precautionary measures, temporarily closing down the Acropolis in Athens and other archaeological sites during the scorching afternoon hours. Visitors who had booked visits during this period have the option to use their tickets later in the day until the sites close at 8 p.m.

Efforts to locate Albert Calibet and the missing Dutch tourist continue amidst the challenging weather conditions and the urgency to find them safe and well. Anyone with information about Calibet or the missing tourist is urged to contact the authorities or the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau.
