**Cheers Icon George Wendt's Cause of Death Revealed Two Weeks After His Passing**
Beloved actor George Wendt, renowned for his role as Norm Peterson on the iconic NBC show "Cheers," passed away in his sleep on May 20 at the age of 76. The cause of death, as confirmed by a Los Angeles County Department of Public Health death certificate, was cardiac arrest. Wendt was cremated on May 28.
George Wendt's endearing portrayal of Norm, the amiable barfly, earned him six consecutive Emmy nominations during the show's 11-season run from 1982 to 1993. Despite initial low ratings leading to the show almost being canceled after its first season, "Cheers" went on to become a television staple, consistently ranking in the top 10 for eight of its final 10 seasons and becoming the most-watched show in its ninth season.
Wendt's death came as a shock to fans and colleagues alike. Just six months before his passing, the actor was seen being wheeled out of a California dialysis clinic, looking noticeably frail. His death also poignantly coincided with the 32nd anniversary of the "Cheers" finale, which aired in May 1993.
In the wake of his death, Wendt's family released a statement expressing their profound loss. "George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend, and confidant to all those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever," the statement read, requesting privacy during this difficult time.
Ted Danson, who played the bartender Sam Malone on "Cheers," paid an emotional tribute to his co-star and friend. "I am devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us. I am sending all my love to Bernadette and the children. It is going to take me a long time to get used to this. I love you, Georgie," Danson shared in a statement to People.
Wendt's character, Norm Peterson, was well-loved for his iconic barroom entrances and jovial personality. Known for his occupations as an accountant, painter, decorator, and coast guard, Norm became a fan favorite largely due to Wendt's charismatic performance. Reflecting on his role, Wendt told Chicago Magazine in 2021, "Norm is just me with better writing."
Beyond "Cheers," Wendt's impact extended into other realms of entertainment. He was the uncle and godfather of "Ted Lasso" star Jason Sudeikis, and his former co-stars, like Melissa Joan Hart from "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," remembered him fondly. Hart commented that "heaven just got a little funnier" with Wendt's arrival.
Wendt had been a cherished figure not only in the realm of television entertainment but also to his family and friends. He had been married to actress Bernadette Birkett since 1978, and together they had one daughter and two sons. George Wendt's legacy as a beloved actor and friend will continue to be celebrated by fans and colleagues alike.
