Red Sox manager Alex Cora was sent to the showers after only one out into Boston's game against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday afternoon. This marked the third ejection of the season for Cora, who hurried onto the field to dispute an obstruction call following a plea from Twins manager Rocco Baldelli. The dispute arose when Twins leadoff man Byron Buxton was awarded third base due to an interference call on Red Sox second baseman Vaughn Grissom at the bag.
The interference incident happened when Red Sox pitcher Nick Pivetta attempted to pick off Buxton at second base. However, a knee drop by Grissom led to Baldelli contesting the call. Despite the commotion, Boston managed to escape the first inning without allowing any runs to the Twins. Following his ejection, Cora had to watch the rest of the game from the dugout as he prepared for Game 2 of the doubleheader at Fenway Park.
Cora's absence in the dugout did not hinder the Red Sox in the second game, as they went on to compete against the Twins in the nightcap. Although the early ejection may have provided Cora with extra time to prepare for the next game, it also highlighted the intensity and passion with which managers defend their teams on the field. The incident adds to Cora's list of ejections this season, underscoring the emotions and high stakes involved in baseball games, even in the early innings.
