An unprecedented heat wave continues to scorch the Western United States, leaving approximately 42 million people under dangerous heat alerts, warns the National Weather Service. With blistering temperatures persisting above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, cities like Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Boise, and Spokane are expected to witness record-setting temperatures on Friday.

The National Weather Service emphasizes the seriousness of the situation, stating that this long-duration heat wave is not to be taken lightly and can be deadly. Dozens of daily record highs are predicted across a significant portion of the West until Saturday. Moreover, hazardous heat is anticipated to expand to portions of the central and eastern US by late this weekend.

The National Weather Service field office in Los Angeles cautions that this scorching heat wave will persist in certain areas throughout the upcoming week. On Friday, high temperatures are forecasted to reach as high as 116 degrees in Las Vegas, 103 degrees in Salt Lake City, and 101 degrees in Denver.

While relief is expected in northwest Arizona and southern Nevada with storms forecasted on Friday, southeast Texas continues to swelter in sizzling temperatures. The region, which recently faced the impact of Hurricane Beryl, is likely to witness heat index values ranging from 100 to 105 degrees. The heat index describes how the combination of temperature and humidity feels to the human body.

The aftermath of Hurricane Beryl has left over 1 million utility customers without power in southeast Texas, according to Poweroutage.us. The National Weather Service has warned that this power outage could exacerbate the already dangerous heat conditions.

As approximately 42 million people across the West, Rocky Mountains, and southeast Texas remain under heat alerts, it is crucial for individuals to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the extreme heat. Staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged outdoor activities, and seeking cool environments are some measures that can help mitigate the risks associated with this record-breaking heat wave.
