A spectacular event unfolded in the night sky over parts of Spain and Portugal as a rare comet fragment streaked across, creating a mesmerizing blue fireball. The European Space Agency (ESA) shared a breathtaking video on Sunday, captured by its "fireball camera," showcasing the celestial phenomenon.

Videos filmed from various cities in both countries started surfacing on social media, depicting the extraordinary sight of the comet fragment blazing through the atmosphere with astonishing speed, illuminating the sky in vivid tones of blue and green. Witnesses were left in awe, with one person describing the experience as feeling like a scene from a movie.

Initially believed to be a meteor, the ESA later clarified that the luminous object was, in fact, a small piece of a comet. Experts at the Spanish Calar Alto astronomical observatory, after a preliminary analysis conducted by Andalusia's Institute of Astrophysics, determined that the object had a "cometary origin."

The fireball, traveling at an astounding 28 miles per second, left observers enthralled before disintegrating and burning up over the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately, the ESA stated that the prospects of finding any meteorites from this event are highly unlikely.

The skies over various cities bore witness to this astronomical spectacle. CCTV footage released by the mayor's office in Cadiz, Spain, captured the comet fragment crossing the sky at 12:46 am local time. Similarly, a video from the Portuguese city of Barcelos showed the fragment streaking across the sky while a singer performed at a concert. In Porto, Portugal's second-largest city, the sky momentarily turned bright, as shown in another remarkable video.

The incandescent display prompted numerous emergency calls from concerned individuals who wanted to report the phenomenon. Bernardo Taborda, a resident of Lisbon, remarked on how the sky turned bright green, almost resembling daylight. With a sense of disbelief, Taborda shared, "It felt like a movie, we all looked at each other, and we were stunned."

NASA provided insight into the mesmerizing blue-green color of the fireball, explaining that the combustion of magnesium in meteors produces this stunning hue.

As news of this breathtaking celestial event spread, individuals across both countries marveled at the natural wonder that graced their skies. The rare sighting of this dazzling comet fragment left a lasting impression on all those fortunate enough to bear witness to this extraordinary display.
