Residents in several Northern California counties are bracing for a potential Public Power Safety Shutoff on Tuesday due to concerns about adverse weather conditions. In an effort to prevent wildfires, the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is closely monitoring the situation and preparing for a possible interruption in power supply.
According to Yolo County officials, high winds forecasted for Tuesday may cause branches or debris to strike live electric lines, posing a significant risk of wildfires. PG&E has reported that the shutoff is likely to commence between 2:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Tuesday and hopes to restore electricity service to affected areas by 2 p.m. on Wednesday, as indicated on the company's outage map.
The power shutoffs are estimated to impact approximately 12,000 customers across various counties in the region. The breakdown of affected customers by county is as follows:
- Yolo: 204 customers
- Solano: 96 customers
- Colusa: 550 customers
- Glenn: 361 customers
- Lake: 49 customers
- Napa: 9 customers
- Shasta: 8,888 customers
- Tehama: 1,855 customers
To address the heightened fire danger, a Red Flag Warning will be in effect from Monday night until Wednesday evening for the Sacramento Valley. Gusty north winds combined with dry conditions are expected, further emphasizing the need for precautionary measures.
The PG&E's decision to initiate the Public Power Safety Shutoff is part of their ongoing efforts to prioritize public safety, particularly in areas prone to wildfires. By proactively cutting off power during extreme weather conditions, the utility company aims to mitigate the risk of fire caused by contact between tree branches, debris, and energized electric lines.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed about the situation through official channels and to make necessary arrangements to ensure their safety and comfort during the power outage.
