In response to Florida's recently approved six-week abortion ban, President Biden's reelection campaign has released an advertisement reminding voters of former President Donald Trump's influence in ending the federal right to an abortion. The ad aims to highlight Trump's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade and his establishment of a conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court.
The ad begins with a clip of Trump proudly stating, "For 54 years, they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I'm proud to have done it." Trump's presidency saw the appointment of three Supreme Court justices, resulting in a 6-3 conservative majority that eventually overturned the landmark law in 2022.
President Biden is featured in the ad emphasizing Trump's intentions, stating, "In 2016, Donald Trump ran to overturn Roe v. Wade. Now, in 2024, he's running to pass a national ban on a woman's right to choose." However, in February, Trump expressed his uncertainty about supporting a national 15-week abortion ban, acknowledging the potential political consequences.
The Biden campaign aims to highlight the Democrats' unwavering support for abortion access, with Biden stating, "I'm running to make Roe v. Wade the law of the land again, so women again have a federal guarantee to the right to choose. Donald Trump doesn't trust women. I do."
The campaign has invested a significant budget, with a "seven-figure buy" for this ad as part of a $30 million advertising effort focused on battleground states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, and Nevada. The campaign believes that the issue of abortion rights can potentially help them flip Florida, a state won by Trump in 2020, where women have fewer alternatives due to the recently approved ban. Furthermore, neighboring Georgia also enforces stringent abortion laws.
Julie Chavez-Rodriguez, the campaign manager, expressed concern over the far-reaching effect of the Florida ban, stating, "This new, extreme abortion ban - one that Donald Trump personally paved the way for - will now amount to a ban for the entire Southeast. Women in need of reproductive care throughout the region now face a choice between putting their lives at risk or traveling hundreds or thousands of miles to get care."
Since the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Democrats have consistently highlighted abortion rights as a winning issue. In the 2022 midterm elections, it helped limit their losses, and in state ballot measures, abortion access has emerged victorious every time, regardless of the state's conservative leaning. Seven states, including Kansas and Ohio, have enacted legislation to protect abortion rights since the Court's ruling.
In a separate development, the Florida Supreme Court ruled that a ballot measure known as Amendment 4, which would allow abortion until viability, can be included on the state's November ballot. However, it will require 60% support to pass.
President Biden avoids using the word "abortion" in the ad and instead refers to women's "right to choose." As a devout Catholic, he personally opposes abortion but supports women's access to it. This has drawn criticism from the church, with Wilton Cardinal Gregory of the Archdiocese of Washington referring to the president as a "cafeteria Catholic." However, Right Rev. Marianna Edgar Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington, defended Biden, emphasizing that a public leader can practice their faith without imposing it on everyone else.
A recent CBS News poll conducted in March revealed that a majority of voters believe that the overturning of Roe v. Wade has had a negative impact on the country.
