In a highly anticipated event, President Joe Biden landed in New York City on Thursday for a star-studded fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall. The fundraiser, which boasted former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton as special guests, was expected to set a record haul of $25 million for a single event. This was seen as a significant boost for President Biden as he aimed to build a substantial cash advantage over his potential opponent, former President Donald Trump.
However, amidst the glitz and glamour of the event, President Biden had yet to publicly address the tragic killing of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller, who was laid to rest earlier this week. Former President Trump, who attended Officer Diller's wake on Long Island, expressed his condolences to his grieving wife, Stephanie, and called for a return to "law and order."
Meanwhile, President Biden, alongside Obama and Clinton, engaged in a lighthearted podcast interview with actors Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. The three Democratic presidents also participated in a fundraising program that included a moderated discussion with CBS "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert. This exclusive event catered to the nation's wealthiest citizens, who had the opportunity to have their photos taken with the prominent trio by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz.
Prior to President Biden's arrival, a 34-year-old ex-convict named Guy Rivera was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Officer Diller's tragic death. Mayor Eric Adams, a former NYPD officer himself, also paid his respects at Officer Diller's wake.
Although the White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, confirmed that President Biden spoke with Mayor Adams to express his condolences, it remains unclear whether the President reached out directly to Officer Diller's family.
As news of the fundraiser circulated, the Biden campaign refrained from commenting on President Biden's public silence regarding Officer Diller's death. Instead, they issued a press release touting the event as "the most successful political fundraiser in American history," with over 5,000 supporters in attendance and thousands more tuning in online.
Meanwhile, former President Trump attempted to redirect the focus, appealing to his grassroots supporters and emphasizing their contributions to his campaign rather than relying on Hollywood elites.
President Biden's ability to amass a significant financial advantage over former President Trump, despite trailing in national and swing state polls, underscores the dynamics of the upcoming presidential race. As the campaign trail heats up, the candidates' strategies to win over voters and address key issues will undoubtedly come into sharper focus.
