President Biden is scheduled to visit Brownsville, Texas, on Thursday, with possible plans to take executive action to address the ongoing border crisis. On the same day, former President Trump is also set to make remarks in Eagle Pass, Texas. Biden's visit is expected to focus on meeting with U.S. Border Patrol agents, law enforcement, and local leaders, emphasizing the importance of passing the Senate's bipartisan border security agreement.
Since Biden took office, nearly 7.3 million migrants have been reported to have illegally crossed the southwest border, surpassing the population of 36 individual states. U.S. Customs and Border Protection data shows 961,537 border encounters in the current fiscal year, with projections indicating a potential record-breaking year in fiscal 2024.
The conflict between Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the Biden administration continues in Eagle Pass, where the Justice Department has requested the Supreme Court to order Texas to allow Border Patrol agents back into Shelby Park. The Department of Homeland Security has demanded full access to the park in emergency scenarios, amid heightened tension and deterrence efforts made by Texas National Guard troops.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection sources have identified a shift in illegal crossings from Texas to Arizona and California, where there is perceived to be less deterrence. As Biden and Trump visit the southern border, the focus remains on the escalating border crisis and the need for bipartisan action to address the growing challenges.
