In a heartfelt address to children gathered in Rome's stadium for the first World Children's Day (WCD), Pope Francis asked for prayers for those suffering from war and injustice, while emphasizing the profound unity and love within the Holy Trinity.
Speaking on Trinity Sunday, the Pope described the Holy Trinity as a loving family consisting of God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. He explained that although they are three distinct persons, there is only one God.
During his homily, Pope Francis asked the children, "When we pray to God the Father, what is the prayer that we all pray?" The children eagerly responded, "The Our Father." The Holy Father encouraged them to always seek guidance from God, their loving Father who created and deeply loves each one of them.
Moving on to Jesus, Pope Francis spoke of the importance of Jesus in their lives, highlighting how Jesus helps, stays close to, and forgives all their sins. He asked the children, "Is it true that Jesus forgives everything?" Their enthusiastic response of "yes!" resonated throughout the stadium.
The Pope then turned their attention to the Holy Spirit, explaining the challenge of understanding this divine presence within them. He described the Holy Spirit as the one who accompanies them in life, guiding them to do good and offering comfort and strength during difficult times. Encouraging unity, Pope Francis asked the children to repeat these words together.
Continuing his address, Pope Francis reminded the children of their Mother in Heaven, Mary. He asked, "What is the name of our Mother in Heaven?" and the children joyfully replied, "Mary." Together, they recited the Hail Mary.
In closing, Pope Francis urged the children to pray not only for their own families but also for their parents, grandparents, and for peace in the world. "Pray for us," the Pope expressed, "so that we can go forward, all of us."
The Pope's message on World Children's Day served as a reminder to engage in prayer, seek divine guidance, and embrace the unity and love within the Holy Trinity. As children around the world heard the Holy Father's words, they were encouraged to be ambassadors of peace and to pray fervently for a better world.
