Democratic Representative Adam Schiff is leading the race for U.S. Senate in California, according to a recent poll conducted by Inside California Politics, Emerson College, and Nexstar Media. The survey of 1,000 registered voters revealed that Schiff has increased his support from 25% to 28% since January. Republican candidate Steve Garvey appears to be securing the crucial second place spot with his support rising from 18% to 22%. Rep. Katie Porter has also seen an increase in support, climbing from 13% to 16%, while Rep. Barbara Lee's backing has remained steady at 9%, the poll indicated.
The poll, which has an error margin of three percentage points, found that 17% of likely voters are still undecided, down from 24% in the previous poll. Age played a significant role in candidate support, with Schiff garnering strong support from voters in their 60s and over 70, while Porter's strength lies with younger voters. Garvey's support is notably with older voters, particularly those over 70.
The survey also asked voters about their perception of the candidates following a recent debate. While 69% of the surveyed population were familiar with the debate, 33% believed Schiff emerged as the winner, followed by Porter at 19% and Garvey at 18%. Additionally, the top two candidates from the primary on March 5 will proceed to the general election in November to determine Senator Dianne Feinstein's successor.
The poll also shed light on the key issues concerning California voters, with the economy topping the list at 27%, followed by immigration and housing affordability at 14% each. Crime, healthcare, homelessness, education, threats to democracy, and abortion were also mentioned as significant concerns for voters.
In terms of which candidate voters trust to handle various issues, Schiff led in areas such as crime, homelessness, the war in Israel and Gaza, and immigration. For abortion-related matters, Porter gained the highest trust from voters, according to the poll.
Independent voters seem to be split between Garvey and Schiff, which could potentially impact the outcome of the Senate race in California. It remains to be seen how these numbers and trends will influence the upcoming election in November.
