The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for a truly unique AFC North race this season, as they face their divisional foes much later than ever before. Week 11 marks the start of their showdowns against divisional rivals, setting a team record for the latest commencement of these crucial games. Although the NFL insists that this was not their intention, but rather a result of how the schedule fell into place, it is something that will be explored for future seasons.

Drawing an analogy to college basketball schedules, Vice President of Broadcast Planning, Mike North, highlighted that non-conference games are typically played at the beginning of the season, akin to the Steelers' situation. However, when comparing to the college basketball powerhouse Kansas Jayhawks, who have an easier lead-in by facing mid-major opponents, the NFL offers no respite. The Steelers' early matchups may appear relatively easier, but they are by no means simple. The team faces the Atlanta Falcons away in their season opener, who boast an underrated roster and improved quarterback play compared to last year. Subsequently, they visit the Denver Broncos, where historical success has eluded them, before opening their home slate against the formidable Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3. Week 4 takes them on the road again to face the Indianapolis Colts, who will welcome back quarterback Anthony Richardson.

Notably, the Steelers are not alone in this peculiar scheduling situation. The Chicago Bears also find themselves not facing an NFC North opponent until Week 11 when they host the Green Bay Packers. However, there is a stark difference in the strength of schedules, with the Steelers having the third most challenging slate while the Bears enjoy the third easiest. Additionally, the Bears begin their campaign at home and have the advantage of playing two out of their first four games at Soldier Field, unlike the Steelers.

While the scheduling intricacies have ignited discussions, it should be noted that predictions of toughness or ease can quickly change as the season progresses. Injuries, surprise teams, and disappointing performances will undoubtedly impact the landscape. Last year's end-of-season schedule for the Steelers appeared imposing upon its release, with matchups against the Cincinnati Bengals, Seattle Seahawks on the road, and the Baltimore Ravens. However, circumstances unfolded differently, with the Steelers facing Jake Browning instead of Joe Burrow and the Ravens resting key starters in their finale. This highlights how the landscape can evolve dramatically over time.

The layout and structure of the schedule undoubtedly make for an interesting discussion, particularly with the hand that Pittsburgh has been dealt. As the season unfolds, it is certain to bring unforeseen twists and turns, making the late AFC North race for the Steelers all the more captivating.
