### Twins Face Pitching Challenges as Matthews Hits IL, Coulombe Returns

The Minnesota Twins are shuffling their pitching roster after announcing that right-handed pitcher Zebby Matthews has been placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 5, due to a shoulder strain. In a corresponding move, left-handed pitcher Danny Coulombe has been activated from the 15-day IL, potentially providing a much-needed boost to the bullpen.

Matthews' injury comes as a surprise, especially given his strong performance in his latest start, where he held the Oakland Athletics to one run over five innings, leading to the Twins’ 6-1 victory on June 4. Despite this solid outing, Matthews has had a challenging season with an ERA of 5.21 over 19 innings. However, his advanced metrics suggest he has pitched better than his ERA indicates, with a 3.31 SIERA and a 30.1% strikeout rate.

The rotation spot left vacant by Matthews adds to the Twins' current pitching woes, as they are already coping with the absence of Pablo Lopez. David Festa has been filling in for Lopez, and now the team is likely to call up Simeon Woods Richardson from Triple-A to replace Matthews. Festa and Woods Richardson have struggled so far this season, placing additional pressure on starters Joe Ryan, Bailey Ober, and Chris Paddack to maintain the rotation’s efficacy.

The Twins might explore the waiver wire or consider low-level trades for veteran pitching depth, though a significant acquisition is not expected until closer to the trade deadline. The extent of Matthews' shoulder injury will also influence the urgency of such moves; a speedy recovery could alleviate some concerns.

On a more positive note, Danny Coulombe's return to the bullpen could be significant. Coulombe last pitched on May 14 before an extensor strain sidelined him. Remarkably, he has yet to allow an earned run over 16 2/3 innings this season, with an impressive 3.3% walk rate and 31.7% strikeout rate. Given that the Twins have been without a left-handed option in the bullpen, Coulombe's activation is timely.

Additionally, Michael Tonkin has resumed his minor league rehab assignment, throwing a scoreless inning for Triple-A Saint Paul. Tonkin has been out of major league action this season due to a rotator cuff strain and a subsequent setback with biceps tendinitis.

As the Twins navigate these pitching challenges, the return of key players like Coulombe and the potential recovery of pitchers like Matthews and Tonkin will be vital for maintaining their competitive edge.
