In an unexpected move just days before the start of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles have received news of the reinstatement of cornerback Isaiah Rodgers by the NFL. The 26-year-old player had been serving an indefinite suspension due to violations of the league's sports gambling policy.
Rodgers, who was initially suspended last summer while playing for the Indianapolis Colts, was quickly released by the team. The Eagles took a chance on him by signing him in August and he remained banned from playing, allegedly for betting on NFL games, including his own.
Despite being away from NFL action for an entire year, there is speculation that Rodgers could be a valuable asset for the Philadelphia Eagles in the upcoming season. With the team's desperate need for help in both the short and long-term in the secondary, Rodgers could potentially land a significant role.
Before his suspension, Rodgers had garnered attention as one of the top up-and-coming multipurpose defenders. Despite his smaller stature, standing at 5-10 and weighing 170 pounds, the UMass product impressed with his blazing closing speed. In his rookie season in 2020, Rodgers ranked third in the NFL in kick returns, averaging 28.8 yards per return and even scoring a touchdown on a 101-yard run-back.
In 2022, Rodgers began to make a mark on the Colts' defense, recording three interceptions and seven pass breakups, despite only playing in 48% of the team's snaps. He solidified his position as a part-time starter in 2022, showcasing his talent by recovering four fumbles and holding opposing quarterbacks to a completion percentage of just 58.6% when targeted.
Julian Blackmon, the Colts' breakout safety in 2023, had previously praised Rodgers' playmaking abilities, stating that he "needs to be on the field." Now reinstated with the Eagles, it is expected that his teammates in Philadelphia will echo those sentiments.
With the aging of cornerbacks Darius Slay Jr. and James Bradberry, Rodgers brings a rejuvenating combination of youth and experience to the team's defense. Additionally, with the NFL's renewed emphasis on kickoffs, Rodgers could also become a vital component in the Eagles' return game.
While Rodgers' return does not necessarily mean that the Eagles will pass on selecting a cornerback in the early rounds of the draft, it does provide them with an additional option—a high-upside one at that.
The Philadelphia Eagles are undoubtedly excited to welcome back Isaiah Rodgers to the game, anticipating the contributions and impact he will bring to their roster. As the 2024 NFL Draft looms, the team now has a strengthened defensive lineup and a potential game-changer in Rodgers.
