In a recent development, the Philadelphia district attorney's office has launched an investigation following the arrest of Celena Morrison, Philadelphia's executive director of the Office of LGBT Affairs, and her husband, Darius McLean. The arrests took place during a traffic stop on Saturday morning, as documented in a video recorded by Morrison.
According to police records, the incident unfolded when a Pennsylvania State trooper pulled over a gray Infiniti sedan on Interstate 76 at 9:09 a.m. Alleged multiple vehicle code violations were observed, but no specific details about the violations were provided. While conducting the traffic stop, a green Dodge sedan arrived at the scene and parked behind the trooper's patrol vehicle, leading to an altercation between the driver of the Dodge and the trooper.
As tensions escalated, the trooper attempted to arrest the driver of the Dodge for refusing multiple lawful orders, resulting in a struggling arrest. It is during this encounter that Morrison, who was in the Infiniti, allegedly interfered with the trooper's attempt to make an arrest. Consequently, both Morrison and McLean were arrested and now face charges of resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct, and other related charges.
The arrest was captured on video by Morrison, which reveals McLean on the ground with an officer standing over him. In the footage, McLean can be heard expressing concern about being targeted due to his race. The officer refuted this claim before turning towards Morrison and instructing her to turn around. A scuffle seems to occur, causing the camera to fall to the ground, amidst screams in the background.
Throughout the video, Morrison can be heard pleading with the officers, asserting her position as a city official and stating that she works for the mayor. She also claims to have been punched by one of the arresting officers, questioning their aggressive behavior. McLean, desperate for his glasses, is warned not to reach for anything.
The Pennsylvania State Police, as well as the Philadelphia district attorney's office, have launched separate investigations into the incident. The state trooper involved will be placed on administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation, according to spokesperson Adam Reed.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker has expressed concern over the video footage and has stated that further comments will be reserved until the investigation has concluded. The district attorney's office emphasized that no charging decisions have been made, awaiting a thorough investigation.
As the investigation continues, the Philadelphia district attorney's office has encouraged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward. Both Morrison and McLean have yet to respond to requests for comment, leaving many questioning the circumstances surrounding their arrests.
The outcome of the investigations will play a crucial role in shedding light on this incident and determining the appropriate course of action moving forward.
