Bell's palsy occurs when a nerve controlling facial muscles becomes inflamed or injured. While the severity of Bell's palsy can vary, it is more common among individuals between the ages of 15 and 45. Infections caused by viruses like herpes simplex, Epstein-Barr, as well as Lyme disease and autoimmune disorders, have also been associated with Bell's palsy. Diagnosing Bell's palsy does not involve a single test. Doctors typically examine the affected individual's facial muscles to confirm the diagnosis and rule out more serious conditions like a stroke. Treatment for Bell's palsy depends on the severity of symptoms and may involve the use of steroidal medications to reduce nerve inflammation or antivirals. Patients experiencing eyelid involvement may receive additional care to protect the eye from dryness, such as the use of eyepatches, eye drops, or ointments.

The good news is that Bell's palsy is mostly temporary, with the majority of patients recovering some or all facial function within a few weeks to six months. While facing this challenging condition, Joel Embiid remains determined to support his team during the intense playoff series.
