**Joel Embiid and Paul George Miss Fifth Straight Game Due to Knee Injuries**
In Camden, N.J., the Philadelphia 76ers will face off against Memphis without the presence of Joel Embiid and Paul George, marking the fifth consecutive game both players will miss due to left knee injuries. Their absence continues as the NBA season progresses, with each player yet to make an on-court appearance this season.
Embiid, who has not played any significant basketball since the gold medal victory with Team USA at the Paris Olympics, was an active participant in Friday's practice session, including engaging in 5-on-5 scrimmages. This comes as part of his recovery process from left knee management issues that sidelined him for the entire preseason. Despite participating fully in practice, he remains out, a situation reflecting caution and thorough management.
The 76ers’ star was notably restricted to 39 games last season after undergoing knee surgery following a meniscus tear incurred during a January 30 matchup against Golden State. Reflecting on his career's numerous injuries, Embiid stated, "If your body doesn't react well, and if your body tells you one thing, sit out. I've done it." He has emphasized his commitment and risk-taking for the team's sake, countering criticism about his willingness to play.
In a turn of events earlier this week, the NBA fined the 76ers $100,000 for public statements by officials that misrepresented Embiid's health status, although the league concluded that its player participation policy was not breached.
Drafted as the No. 3 pick in 2014, Embiid missed his first two seasons due to injuries. Since his debut season in 2016, he has participated in 433 out of 805 regular-season games and 59 of 67 playoff games. His past injuries include a sprained right knee during the 2023 playoffs, sidelining him in crucial games against Brooklyn and Boston, as well as various injuries in earlier seasons affecting his playoff appearances.
As Embiid aims for a comeback, he acknowledges the mental challenges of regaining trust in his body post-surgery. Despite this, he is optimistic about returning soon, potentially during the upcoming West Coast trip starting on Monday against Phoenix. "I want to be at my best," he remarked, highlighting the importance of feeling comfortable and confident on the court.
Embiid remains resolute about his decision to play in the Paris Olympics, viewing it as a vital part of his career despite his ongoing injury struggles.
