In light of the ongoing wildfire season, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is stressing the importance of being prepared and providing assistance for animals in danger. PETA director, Byrne, emphasizes the need to have a plan in place ahead of time to ensure the safety of both small and large animals during emergencies.

Byrne advises pet owners to have their contact information for local humane societies and open-admission shelters readily available, along with other essential items. She encourages pet owners to "think ahead" and prepare an emergency kit before disaster strikes. Small animals such as cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and gerbils should be securely kept in carriers, while birds should be covered before being placed inside a carrier. Dogs should always be on a harness with a collar that includes identification tags and a leash.

For larger animals like horses, sheep, cows, and llamas, Byrne emphasizes the necessity of having an evacuation plan in advance. However, if evacuation becomes immediate and it is not possible to bring these animals along, Byrne advises against penning, locking, or tying them up. Allowing them to run free increases their chances of escaping flames and surviving.

In cases where animals are abandoned during emergencies, PETA and local authorities work towards reuniting them with their guardians, if they were not intentionally or negligently left behind. Those who purposely abandon animals may face legal consequences, as it is considered a crime. PETA reminds the public that anyone witnessing an animal in danger should assist if possible. If not, it is crucial to note the exact location of the animal and quickly alert emergency services for immediate help.

Even for those not evacuating, PETA suggests taking precautions to keep animals safe in wildfire-prone areas. This includes limiting outdoor activities and access to the outdoors for pets during periods of smoke and falling ash.

PETA offers a comprehensive list of free tips to help individuals prepare disaster preparedness kits and plans that also consider their companion animals.

As wildfire season continues, PETA emphasizes the importance of being prepared and ready to assist animals in need. By planning ahead and providing assistance, animal guardians can help ensure the safety and well-being of their beloved pets during emergencies.
