French police detained a man who was spotted scaling the iconic Eiffel Tower just hours before the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics was set to commence. The incident prompted the evacuation of the Paris landmark on Sunday afternoon as authorities swiftly intervened to ensure the safety of both the climber and the public.
Video footage circulating on social media captured the shirtless individual being escorted by police officers around the base of the tower. Despite his handcuffed hands, the climber appeared to be in good spirits, flashing a broad smile at the onlookers and remarking, "bloody warm, innit?".
Speaking anonymously due to the ongoing investigation, a Paris police official confirmed that the climber began his ascent at approximately 2:45 p.m. It remains unclear where exactly the individual initiated the climb or whether he descended the tower voluntarily or as a result of police intervention.
