Jon Landau, the renowned film producer who achieved fame for his collaborations with James Cameron, including the blockbuster films "Titanic" and the "Avatar" franchise, has passed away at the age of 63 after a courageous fight against cancer, according to a source close to the family.

During the 1990s, Landau held the position of executive vice president of feature film production at Twentieth Century Fox, though he gained widespread recognition as the producer of the 1997 mega-hit film "Titanic," which earned him an Academy Award for Best Picture. Additionally, his role as a producer in the "Avatar" franchise alongside Cameron solidified his reputation in the film industry.

Landau's involvement in "Titanic" made cinematic history, as the film became the first to surpass $1 billion at the global box office. His tenure at Twentieth Century Fox also saw him oversee the production of notable films such as "Die Hard 2," "True Lies," "Power Rangers," and "The Last of the Mohicans."

In recent years, Landau took on the responsibility of expanding the "Avatar" universe in collaboration with Cameron and the Walt Disney Company. As the Chief Operating Officer of Cameron's production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, Landau played a crucial role in bringing the "Avatar" land and attraction to life at Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom theme park. He also produced the highly acclaimed 2019 film "Alita: Battle Angel."

The long-awaited "Avatar: The Way of Water," the first of four planned sequels, finally made its way to theaters in 2022 and enjoyed a staggering global box office success, grossing over $2.3 billion. Landau was at the helm as the producer for all four sequels, with "Avatar 3" and parts of "Avatar 4" already filmed.
