Three-time Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas has announced her withdrawal from the U.S. gymnastics championships in Fort Worth, Texas, after sustaining an ankle injury during training. The setback marks the end of Douglas' remarkable attempt to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics after a hiatus of eight years. At the age of 28, Douglas would have become the oldest American woman to compete in gymnastics at the Olympics since 1952.
Expressing her gratitude for what she has achieved during her 18-month comeback journey, Douglas shared her love for the sport and her dedication to pushing her limits. She expressed hope that her story would inspire both her peers and the next generation of gymnasts, by proving that age is just a number and hard work can lead to accomplishing anything.
Douglas, who became the first Black gymnast to win the Olympic all-around title at the 2012 London Games, made history once again by helping the U.S. claim consecutive team golds in London and Rio in 2016. Following her announcement of a comeback in February, Douglas returned to competition in April at the American Classic, where she secured a spot to compete at the U.S. championships.
However, at the U.S. Classic in Hartford, Connecticut earlier this month, Douglas faced challenges on the bars and subsequently withdrew from the remainder of the competition. The U.S. championships was her final opportunity to earn an invitation to the Olympic trials in Minneapolis in June. Despite this setback, Douglas remains determined to recover from her injury and begin training for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, when she will be 32 years old.
Douglas expressed her satisfaction in proving her elite-level skills to herself and the sport, affirming her commitment to training for the L.A. 2028 Olympics. She also hopes to represent the U.S. at a home Olympics, which she considers a great honor. Additionally, Douglas plans to reunite with her longtime representative, Lowell Taub of Range Sports.
The gymnastics community and fans all around the world extend their support and well wishes to Gabby Douglas as she focuses on her recovery and prepares for the future challenges that lie ahead. Despite encountering obstacles, her determination and resilience continue to inspire many within and outside the world of gymnastics.
