Olivia Munn Opens Up About Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Journey
Actress Olivia Munn has bravely shared her battle with breast cancer in an emotional Instagram post. On Wednesday, the 43-year-old star posted a series of photos and videos from her hospital room, announcing her diagnosis to the world. Munn expressed her hope that by speaking out, she could provide comfort, inspiration, and support to others facing their own health challenges.
In her post, Munn revealed that she had taken a genetic test in February of 2023 as a proactive measure for her health. The test screened for 90 different cancer genes and yielded negative results for all, including the well-known breast cancer gene BRCA. Munn and her sister Sara had both tested negative, leading to a moment of celebration between them.
Despite the negative results, Munn received a breast cancer diagnosis just two months later. Following the diagnosis, she underwent four surgeries within the past 10 months, including a double mastectomy performed 30 days after her biopsy. The actress acknowledged the emotional toll and the extensive knowledge she gained about cancer, treatment options, and hormones throughout her journey.
Munn shared that her cancer was initially detected through a Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score, calculated by her Ob-Gyn. Factors such as age, family history of breast cancer, and childbirth after the age of 30 contributed to her score. The assessment led to further tests, including an MRI, ultrasound, and biopsy, which confirmed Luminal B cancer in both breasts. Luminal B is known for being an aggressive and fast-moving form of the disease.
Fortunately, Munn's cancer was caught in time, and she expressed gratitude for having options in her treatment. She urged other women to ask their doctors to calculate their Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Scores, emphasizing the importance of early detection.
Throughout her post, Munn expressed immense gratitude for the support she received from her friends and family. She specifically thanked her partner, comedian John Mulaney, with whom she shares a toddler son named Malcolm.
Breast cancer is a devastating disease that affects millions of women worldwide. Olivia Munn's openness about her diagnosis and treatment journey serves as a reminder of the importance of regular check-ups and proactive measures in detecting and treating this illness.
