In a small rural town of Barnsdall, Oklahoma, St. Mary's Catholic Church was struck by a powerful tornado on May 6, 2024. The tornado, classified as an EF4 with wind speeds reaching between 165 and 175 mph, left a trail of destruction, damaging numerous homes, businesses, and even a local refinery plant.
Despite the widespread devastation, a beacon of hope emerged amidst the ruins. Father Emmanuel Nduka, who pastors three local churches including St. Mary's, was astonished to discover that the church's tabernacle, which contains the body of Christ, remained intact. The forceful winds had leveled the parish hall adjacent to the church, shattered its windows, and destroyed the entrance door. However, the tabernacle stood undisturbed within the sanctuary, with its sacred light still burning.
Nduka, overwhelmed by the sight, saw this as a sign of God's presence and control even in the face of such adversity. He immediately bowed down in gratitude, recognizing the miracle that had transpired. The community was deeply moved by the survival of the tabernacle, symbolizing resilience and faith amid the chaos.
The tornado caused extensive damage in Barnsdall, leaving 30 to 40 homes damaged or destroyed, including a nursing home. The town's landscape was scarred by the tornado's 39-mile path of destruction. Unfortunately, one person lost their life, and another is still missing as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
Father Nduka, determined to instill hope in his parishioners, resolved to celebrate Mass at St. Mary's this coming Sunday. With progress made in cleanup efforts and utilities restored, the church is now over 90% prepared for the service. The Diocese of Tulsa has extended its support, with the bishop and chancellor visiting the site and offering assistance. Father Nduka expressed gratitude for the men within the parish who have come together in the aftermath of the disaster, providing much-needed help to keep the church going.
The path to a full recovery will be arduous, and additional funds will be necessary. The diocese has urged those wishing to assist in the relief effort to donate to its parish fund, specifically selecting "St. Mary Barnsdall." Every contribution will aid in the rebuilding and restoration of the church and the community it serves.
Father Nduka humbly requested prayers from people of goodwill, seeking strength in the belief that God is in control. He affirms the community's resilience, expressing hope that they will emerge from this trial stronger than ever.
Even in the face of unimaginable loss, the surviving tabernacle stands as a testament to the unwavering faith of the Barnsdall community. It serves as a beacon of hope amidst the wreckage and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is light.
