Oklahoma City Thunder's Chet Holmgren is set to miss a substantial amount of time after fracturing his pelvis during a game against the Golden State Warriors. The injury occurred in the first quarter of Sunday's game when Holmgren fell hard following an attempt to block a layup by Andrew Wiggins, leaving him unable to bear weight on his right leg.
The Thunder announced that the 22-year-old big man sustained a right iliac wing fracture and is anticipated to make a return this season. An update on Holmgren's condition is expected in the next eight to ten weeks.
In a message posted on social media platform X, Holmgren reflected on his situation from the hospital. "Can't tell if I feel better or worse about this having been through something similar before," he wrote. Holmgren conveyed his mixed emotions, stating that while he understands the recovery process, he's also acutely aware of its challenges. "Most of all I'm hurt I can't help my teammates and play for our fans and supporters for a while," he added.
Following the game, Thunder coach Mark Daigneault emphasized the team's resilience in the face of adversity. "This is a resilient, tough, competitive, adaptive team. And that's what we're going to be, regardless of the circumstances," Daigneault stated, underscoring the Thunder's determination to push forward without their 7-foot-1 star.
Holmgren, selected second overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, missed the entire 2022-23 season due to a foot injury sustained in a pro-am game. This season, he has been averaging 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game over 10 games, contributing significantly to the Thunder's 8-2 record. In his rookie season, Holmgren played all 82 games, averaging 16.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game, finishing second in the Rookie of the Year voting.
The Thunder will face the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night, hoping to continue their strong start despite the setback of losing Holmgren.
