In a surprising move, Republican Governor Mike DeWine of Ohio has endorsed state Senator Matt Dolan over Trump-backed businessman Bernie Moreno in the state's three-way GOP primary for a U.S. Senate seat. Governor DeWine's decision to break ranks with former President Donald Trump underscores the division within the party and highlights the ongoing struggle between establishment Republicans and the pro-Trump faction.

Governor DeWine expressed his belief that Dolan is the party's best chance at defeating Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown in the upcoming November election. He praised Dolan for his service, experience, and integrity, emphasizing his ability to listen, fight, and deliver results for Ohio. Dolan has positioned himself as a moderate Republican and is the only candidate in the primary who did not actively seek Trump's endorsement.

This endorsement by DeWine follows a similar late endorsement from former U.S. Senator Rob Portman, further bolstering Dolan's campaign. It is worth noting that DeWine initially stated that he would not make any endorsements in the primary. However, as the primary drew closer with no clear frontrunner and a significant number of undecided Republican voters, he reconsidered his stance.

The endorsement is expected to have a lesser impact on Moreno, who has heavily campaigned on his Trump endorsement. However, it may pose a challenge for Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, another candidate in the primary race, who is trying to establish a winning trajectory. LaRose has been emphasizing the self-funded nature of Dolan and Moreno's campaigns, highlighting that he is not a millionaire like his opponents.

Moreno has been leveraging his Trump endorsement on the campaign trail, receiving support from prominent Trump allies such as South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem and Donald Trump Jr. Additionally, he has gained endorsements from Ohio Senator JD Vance, U.S. Representatives Jim Jordan, and other notable conservative figures like Senators Rand Paul and Ted Cruz, as well as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Nevertheless, DeWine's endorsement suggests that conservative backing alone may not be enough to unseat the incumbent Senator Sherrod Brown. Brown, a three-term senator, has remained a consistently elected politician in Ohio for decades. With the unpopularity of President Joe Biden within the same party and Ohio's rightward political shift in recent years, Republicans view Brown as particularly vulnerable.

Governor DeWine, with his own long-standing political legacy, has reaffirmed his status as a respected figure within the Republican Party. As a former state legislator, congressman, U.S. senator, and lieutenant governor, DeWine won re-election by an impressive 25% margin in 2022, carrying 85 of Ohio's 88 counties.

The Ohio GOP primary is expected to be a closely watched race, with the outcome shaping the party's strategy as it seeks to flip the Senate seat. As the candidates continue to campaign, Ohio voters will weigh their options and ultimately determine who will go head-to-head with incumbent Senator Sherrod Brown in the general election.
